Clinical laboratories and blood banks need permits in New York State. These permits come from the Wadsworth Center at the NYS Department of Health.
Laboratories operated by health professionals for their patients only do not need a permit. However, they must register with the Wadsworth Center.
Facilities need the permit to test specimens, collect specimens or blood, and to distribute blood. Facilities that provide patient-identified results need this permit too. These results may be for research, testing, toxicology, or identity testing.
