Certificate of Fitness for the Use of LPG / CNG at Outdoors Events and for Mobile Cooking (G-23)
City Fire Department
You need a Certificate of Fitness to use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) to fuel cooking equipment at outdoor events.
This Certificate of Fitness is issued to one person only. It can be used anywhere in New York City.

Apply in person
Bring the following documents when you apply in person:

Two forms of ID
- One must be a government-issued photo ID, like a driver's license or passport
In-person applications
- If you pass the exam, you will get your certificate right away.
- If you do not pass, you will receive a report that says you did not pass. To take the exam again, you must submit a new application and pay the fee again.

Renew your certificate:

You need to renew the Certificate of Fitness every three years.

The NYC Fire Department (FDNY) will send a Renewal Notice 90 days before your certificate expires.
The notice includes:- Your certificate number
- Expiration date
- Renewal fee amount

You must renew your certificate within 364 days of the expiration date.

If your certificate is more than one year past its expiration date, you must submit a new application.

FDNY may require you to retake the exam when you renew.

No certificate will be renewed without the required certification form or a retake of the exam.

City employees can request a fee exemption by submitting a copy of their employee ID and a letter from their City agency on official letterhead confirming they are a current employee and the Certificate of Fitness is for work-related duties.

Go to the Public Certification Unit with your completed application form and supporting documents. You will pay the application fee and take the exam.
No appointment is needed.

Get your certificate
- If you pass the exam, you will get your Certificate of Fitness right away
- If you do not pass, you will need to submit a new application, pay the fee again and retake the exam
Gather required information:
- If you are an individual, make sure you have your 12-digit Certificate of Fitness Access ID. This can be found on your Renewal Notice. If you do not have your Renewal Notice, your Access ID is your 8-digit Certificate of Fitness number and the last four digits of your Social Security number
- If you are submitting renewals for company employees, the company must be FDNY-approved and have an 8-digit Company Code.
- To request approval, email: pubrenew@fdny.nyc.gov.
Pay the renewal fee: Pay the $15 renewal fee online by one of the following methods:
- Credit card (American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa)
- Debit card (Mastercard or Visa)
- E-Check
Note: A $25 penalty applies if renewing 90 days to one year after the expiration date in addition to the renewal fee. A 2.49 percent convenience fee applies to all credit card payments. The renewal fee is non-refundable. You cannot request a fee exemption if you renew online.
Receive your certificate:
- If all requirements are met, your certificate will be mailed within 10 days.
Renew online:
- To renew a certificate, click the Renew Online button. Individuals can only renew their own certificate.
Pay the renewal fee: Pay the $15 renewal fee by using one of the following methods:
- Cash
- Credit card (American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa)
- Debit card (Mastercard or Visa)
- Personal or company check
- Money order
- Payable to: New York City Fire Department
