Certificate of Fitness for Storage and Handling of LPG or CNG (G-44)
You need a Certificate of Fitness to store or handle liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG). These gases are extremely flammable, so safety is critical.
If you hold this certificate, you are responsible for:
- Checking the retest date on the gas cylinder
- Making sure the cylinder is inspected by the supplier
- Following all safety procedures to reduce risk
This certificate is issued to one specific person and can be used anywhere in New York City.
To get a G-44 Certificate of Fitness, you must either:

Pass a written exam or

Complete training from a company approved by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY)

If you are taking the exam in person
Bring these documents with you:

Two forms of ID
- One must be a government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license or passport)
If you completed FDNY-approved training
Review the G-44 Alternative Issuance Procedure Information (PDF).
Only your company's Designated Coordinator can submit your application online. They must provide:
- Your personal details: name, mailing address, phone number, email, gender, Social Security number, date of birth, weight, height and work location
- A letter on company letterhead confirming you completed the training
- A completed Applicant Affirmation Form (PDF)
- A copy of your employee ID
- A recent ID photo (2x2 color headshot in JPG or JPEG format)
- A letter from FDNY confirming the training program is approved
Online applications
- If your application meets all New York City Fire Department (FDNY) requirements, your certificate will be mailed to you within five business days.
- If FDNY has questions, they will contact you or your Designated Coordinator within two business days.
- If you or your Designated Coordinator do not respond within 10 days, your application will be terminated. To reapply, you must submit a new application and pay the fee again.
In-person applications
- If you pass the exam, you will get your certificate right after the exam.
- If you fail the exam, you will receive a failure report. To retake the exam, you must submit a new application and pay the fee again.

You must renew your certificate every three years.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) will send a Renewal Notice 90 days before your certificate expires.

The notice includes your certificate number, expiration date and renewal fee.

You must renew within 364 days of the expiration date.

If your certificate is more than one year expired, you must submit a new application.

FDNY may require you to retake the exam when you renew.

No certificate will be renewed without the required form or exam.

Request a replacement certificate

Receive your certificate
- If all requirements are met, your certificate will be issued immediately
Get your 12-digit Certificate of Fitness Access ID
- Found on your Renewal Notice
- If you do not have it: use your eight-digit Certificate of Fitness number and last four digits of your Social Security number
- If renewing for employees, your company must be FDNY-approved and have an eight-digit Company Code
