Driving School Instructor Certificate

If you want to teach at a driving school, you need a Driving School Instructor Certificate from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Certification requirements

To be a certified instructor, you must:

• Be at least 21 years old.
• Have a valid New York State driver license for two years with a good record.
• Have a high school diploma or GED.
• Pass vision, road sign, written and practical tests.
• Have never been convicted of a felony or certain other crimes.
• Complete a DMV-certified Methods and Content Course for In-Car Instruction.

To teach Pre-licensing Courses, you must also complete a 30-hour Teaching Techniques and Methodology course.
