If you want to teach at a driving school, you need a Driving School Instructor Certificate from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Certification requirements
To be a certified instructor, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Have a valid New York State driver license for two years with a good record.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Pass vision, road sign, written and practical tests.
- Have never been convicted of a felony or certain other crimes.
- Complete a DMV-certified Methods and Content Course for In-Car Instruction.
To teach Pre-licensing Courses, you must also complete a 30-hour Teaching Techniques and Methodology course.
