Buildings need fire alarms, fire suppression systems or standpipes. The type depends on the building's use or the construction code.
- Fire alarms: warn people about fire and smoke. They may also alert the Fire Department.
- Fire suppression systems: detect fire and try to put it out with water sprinklers or other tools.
- Standpipes: provide water access for fire hoses and other fire tools inside a building.
The Fire Department must approve these systems before a building can be used. These systems and standpipes must also be tested and maintained regularly.
