Standpipes provide water access points for fire hoses and other fire suppression devices inside a building. Depending on the type of occupancy of a building or the construction code under which it was built the Department of Buildings may require a building to install a standpipe system.

All buildings that currently have standpipes or will have a standpipe system installed must maintain their standpipe system. Standpipe systems must undergo routine testing and maintenance as mandated by the Fire Department. Testing and maintenance must be performed by a person holding an FDNY issued Certificate of Fitness for the type of standpipe system in use at the building. For more information about the specific Certificate of Fitness needed for a specific standpipe system, please contact the New York City Fire Department using the contact information below.

Owners are responsible for inspection, testing and maintenance of the standpipe system in accordance with New York City Fire Code, Section 905 and NFPA 25 National Alarm Fire and Signaling Code.
Records of all inspections and maintenance must be kept on premise for a minimum of three years.
These records must be kept available at all times for Fire Department personnel.
Paper copies of application and study materials for the Certificate of Fitness are available at the address below.
