Medical Waste Treatment Guidelines

Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) is waste from healthcare facilities contaminated by blood, body fluids, or other infectious materials. Regulation is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).



All regulated medical waste must be property treated before disposal. Treatment of medical waste can be done on-site or by an off-site approved facility.

The following treatment processes are allowed:
  • incineration;
  • autoclave;
  • chemical disinfection; and
  • electro-thermal or steam-thermal inactivation.
