About

State Education, Department of

A nurse practitioner is a Registered Nurse who has earned a special certification to practice in a specific specialty area. This certification comes from the New York State Department of Education.

Certification is gained through education and experience. Nurse practitioners may diagnose, treat, and prescribe within their specialty area of practice.

Nurse Practitioners are independently responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of their patients.

NPs do not have to practice under physician supervision. However, all NPs must have at least written practice protocols and an agreement with a collaborating physician.
