To be a Registered Nurse (RN) in New York, you must register with the New York State Education Department.
RNs can provide care and help with health issues. They cannot make medical diagnoses. They must work with a doctor, dentist, nurse practitioner or other specialist.
To become an RN, you need to:
- Meet education and experience requirements
- Pass an exam
If you haven't taken the exam yet, you can get a limited permit. This permit lets you practice under a licensed RN, with the RN employer's permission.
If you have an RN license from another state, you can get it endorsed for New York.
