You do not need a permit from the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (OFTB) for all activities.
Activities that do not require a permit are:
- Filming with hand-held cameras or tripods without asserting exclusive use of City property
- Standing on a street, bridge walkway, sidewalk or other pedestrian passageway while using a hand-held device without asserting exclusive use of City property
- Filming a parade, rally, protest or demonstration with only hand-held devices
- Press photographers with credentials from the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) filming or taking photos
If you do not need a permit from OFTB, you can apply for an Optional Permit. The OFTB Optional Permit helps filmmakers. To get an Optional Permit, you need most of the same documents as for a Required Permit, but no photo ID or insurance is needed.
To get an Optional Permit:
- Equipment: Use only handheld equipment or tripods.
- City property: Do not assert the exclusive use of City property.
- Vehicles and equipment: Do not use cars or non-handheld equipment.
- Fees: There are no fees.
- Download the form.
- Fill out the form on your computer. Do not write by hand.
- Print and sign the form.
- Send it by mail or fax or take it to the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (OFTB).
