The Press Credentials Office (PCO) of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment gives out press credentials, or press cards.
These cards help press members:
- Cross police, fire lines or other restrictions, limitations or barriers at emergencies, breaking news events or public events
- Attend City events open to the press
The PCO offers three types of press cards:
- Standard press card: Given to a press member for up to two years (expires on January 15 of odd years)
- Reserve press card: Given to a news organization for its workers (expires on January 15 of odd years)
- Single-event press card: Given to a press member for one event that has a very short valid period (like the Times Square NYE ball drop)
You can find the criteria for getting a press card in Title 43, Chapter 16 of the Rules of the City of New York. More information about applying is on the PCO's webpage.
You do not need a press card to engage in newsgathering activity or work as a journalist in New York City.
Before January 20, 2022, the NYPD gave out press cards. The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment took over this job on January 20, 2022, as per Local Law 46 of 2021.
- Go to the Press Cards Portal to get a press card.
- A press card is free.
