The NYC Department of Sanitation?s Professional Fee Program provides collection and disposal services for general garbage and recycling generated by physicians, accountants, lawyers, or other licensed professionals, doing business within residential buildings.

Only general trash and recycling is included in this collection service. The Department of Sanitation does not collect and dispose of regulated medical, laboratory, or surgical waste. If a business generates any regulated medical waste, regulations require that the businesses contract with a private hauler for collection and disposal.

Engage in an occupation in part of a home in addition to its residential use or be located in a primarily residential building.
Be properly licensed and permitted to engage in business activities. Located in a basement or on the first or second floor in the residential portion of the building.
Ensure that enrollment in the Professional Fee program does not conflict with any existing contracts with private haulers.

Annual fees are based on the numbers of 20 gallon bags placed out for collection each week:

  • Up to 5 bags = $ 329.89/per year
  • 6-10 bags = $ 612.97/per year
  • 11-15 bags = $ 896.04/per year
  • 16-20 bags = $ 1,179.12/per year

Only solid waste and recyclables should be put out for collection
Designated recyclables should be separated prior to collection
Waste should be properly placed for collection and disposal as to not create any health hazards or emergency conditions. Waste should not create obstructions and be placed in the appropriate containers
No regulated medical, laboratory or surgical wastes should be put out for collection by the Department of Sanitation.
Denied applicants can reapply for the Professional Fee Program. However, the most common reasons for denied applications are businesses in non-eligible professions or locations. Please consult the Selection Criteria, available in the Additional Information Links, before applying for the program.

Submit the completed form and a check or money order to Fiscal Services Department of Sanitation via mail.
The Department of Sanitation will review the application and upon approval will send an enrollment certificate that must be displayed at the service location. Applicants that do not meet the program criteria will be notified by the Collection Office and will need to contract with a private carter for waste removal.
