Rangehood Fire-Suppression Systems

These systems are designed to protect ventilating equipment such as hoods, ducts, and filters. They also protect cooking equipment such as various types of fryers, griddles, range tops, broilers, and woks. Rangehood fire suppression systems are the first line of defense against commercial kitchen fires and promote the safety of life and property. It is imperative that Rangehood fire suppression systems are properly installed in accordance with the New York City Fire Code.

All new installations and proposed modifications / upgrades to existing commercial cooking fire extinguishing systems shall comply with the requirements of the 2022 New York City Fire Code (FC) §609 and §904.3.8, 2022 Building Code §904.12 “Commercial Cooking Systems”, and the referenced standards and listings, including but not limited to UL300 “Fire Testing of Fire Extinguishing Systems for Protection of Commercial Cooking Equipment”. The requirements for specific commercial cooking fire extinguishing system design can be found in the manufacturer’s manual for the desired installation and/or Certificate of Approvals for a device, equipment, or system requiring protection.

When do I need to file?
You are required to file* a Rangehood Application (Fire Suppression plans) for:

• All new kitchen installations and systems, including change of ownership.
• Changes to an existing installation to a UL300 system that does not require hood/duct, fan system, plumbing, or gas shut-off valve changes, or changes of cooking equipment.
• Changes to the fire suppression system due to re-arrangement of existing cooking equipment as identified on FDNY permit under the same hood.
• Changes to fire suppression system due to the removal of equipment identified on FDNY permit under the same hood.
• Changes to plumbing or gas shut-off valve(s).

* the above may also require you to file with DOB.

Note: Maintenance does not require plan filing. Maintenance is defined as replacement of an existing fire suppression system component.

You cannot submit an amendment before submission and approval of an initial plan. There is no need to include a note to differentiate between submission types (New/Upgrade).
