Sand interceptors are needed at car and vehicle washes. They stop sand, grit, rocks and dirt from going into the sewer system. Car and vehicle washes make a lot of this waste. Without sand interceptors, the sewer system would receive unacceptable amounts of pollutants.

Business owners must install sand interceptors. They must follow the requirements in the New York City Administrative Code, Titles 26 and 27. The requirements are also in the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) Building Code, Reference Standards 16: Plumbing, Drainage and Gas Piping and Local Law 2007/033, Enacting the New York City Construction Codes.

If you need to connect to the New York City sewer system to discharge wastewater from sand interceptors, you must file a Wastewater Quality Control Application with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
