Sand Interceptors

About

City Environmental Protection, Department of

Sand Interceptors are required at car / vehicle washes where sand, grit, rocks, and / or dirt is generated. Sand interceptors are used for controlling and preventing these little pieces of waste from entering the sewer system. Car / vehicle wash service facilities generate a considerable amount of sand, grit, rocks, and dirt; without proper interceptors, the drainage system would be loaded with unacceptable amounts of pollutants.

Business owners must install sand interceptors following the specific requirements set forth in the New York City Administrative Code, Titles 26 and 27 linked below under Additional Information. These requirements can also be found in the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), Building Code, Reference Standards 16: Plumbing, Drainage and Gas Piping and Local Law 2007/033, Enacting the New York City Construction Codes linked below.

Business owners who need to connect to the New York City sewer system to discharge wastewater from sand interceptors must file a Wastewater Quality Control Application with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Information regarding this application can be found in the link below under Prerequisites.
