Security Guard Registration

To be a security guard in New York State, you must register with the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS). This is for both armed and unarmed security guards.

Who needs to register?

• Armed security guards
• Unarmed security guards
• Active-duty police officers and volunteers do not need to register

Requirements to register:

• You must meet education rules.
• You need to pass a background check.
• You must give your fingerprints.
• You must be over 18 years old.
• You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
