A permit from the Department of Transportation (DOT) is required for the installation or maintenance of any canopy on a sidewalk at the entrance to a building or place of business within a building. Please note that the installation of a new canopy requires a licensed professional. Prior to installation, approval must be obtained from the NYCDOT Highway Inspection Quality Assurance Unit.
