Industrial Laundry License
A business needs an Industrial Laundry License if it provides laundry services to other businesses like hotels, hospitals, restaurants, gyms and retail laundries, or runs a laundry service in connection with any commercial business, such as a hotel, restaurant or gym.
The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) gives this license.
"Laundry services" means washing, drying, starching or ironing clothes for money. It does not include dry cleaning.
The following do not need an Industrial Laundry license:
- Laundry facilities in any hospital
- Laundry facilities in any home used only by the people who live there

Get the right business certificate: You need a Business Certificate based on your business's legal structure. You do not need to submit this document with your application, but DCWP may ask for it.
- Sole proprietors using a different name need a Business/Assumed Name Certificate
- Partnerships need a Partnership Certificate and, if needed, an Assumed Name Certificate
- Corporations, Limited Partnerships, Limited Liability Companies or Limited Liability Partnerships must register with the New York State Division of Corporations. Check your status at www.dos.ny.gov/corps.

Complete the basic license application: Fill out the Basic License Application with your business information, identification numbers, contact details and history of any charges or licenses.

Complete the industrial laundry self-certification: The owner must fill out the Self-Certification. If you offer delivery services, complete the Vehicle and Delivery Information section.

Provide sales tax identification number: Include your New York State Sales Tax Identification Number or Certificate of Authority Application Confirmation Number on the Basic License Application.

Submit a surety bond: Provide a copy of your business's Surety Bond, naming the City of New York as Obligee. The bond amount depends on the number of employees:
- 0 to 25 employees: $500
- 26 to 50 employees: $1,500
- 51 to 75 employees: $2,500
- 76 to 125 employees: $3,000
- 126 or more employees: $5,000

Provide proof of workers' compensation insurance: Acceptable proofs include:
- C-105.2 - Certificate of Workers' Compensation Insurance
- U-26.3 - State Insurance Fund Certificate of Workers' Compensation Insurance
- Equivalent form used by the New York State Workers' Compensation Board
If not required by law, submit form CE-200 - Certificate of Attestation of Exemption

Provide proof of disability benefits insurance: Acceptable proofs include:
- DB-120.1 - Certificate of Insurance Coverage under the NYS Disability Benefits Law

Provide proof of commercial general liability insurance: Your Certificate of Insurance must:
- Name the City of New York as the certificate holder
- Be executed by a broker and list the NAIC Number
- Include your business name and address exactly as on all documents
- Include the City of New York as "Additional Insured"
- Have an A.M. Best rating greater than A- / "VII" or a Standard & Poor's rating of at least A
- Provide coverage at least as broad as ISO Form CG 0001, be "occurrence" based and have minimum amounts of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate

Note: A nonrefundable 2 percent convenience fee is charged for using a credit card.

Notification by mail: You will get a letter about your license application status within two weeks after the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) gets all needed materials.
- Approved application: If your application is approved, DCWP will send you a license document.
- More information needed: If your application needs more information, DCWP will send you a letter with instructions. You must send the needed materials to DCWP within 10 days of getting this letter. If you do not, your application will be denied.
- Denied application: If your application is denied, DCWP will explain why and tell you how to reapply.

License validity: Licenses last for up to two years. They expire on December 31 in odd-numbered years.

Change of information: If your information changes, tell the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). Call 311 or visit the DCWP Licensing Center. Insurance notification: Tell DCWP within 14 days if your insurance is canceled, expired or ended. You must notify them in writing. Submit it in person or by mail to the DCWP Licensing Center.
