Vehicles used for commercial purposes need a Commercial Vehicle Registration in New York State. Vehicles should be registered with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Residents of New York City must also pay a vehicle use tax when registering a vehicle. The tax rate depends on the type of vehicle. Most vehicles are taxed at $40 per year, but livery, bus, and taxi vehicles are taxed at $400 per year.
