If you run a business with big trucks or other large commercial vehicles (that is, weighing over 10,000 pounds), you need to register them with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

USDOT gives fleet numbers to these vehicles. In New York State, you must have these fleet numbers. Vehicles for personal use do not need this number.

Unified Carrier Registration

If your trucks or buses travel across state or national borders, you need Unified Carrier Registration (UCR). New York State charges fees for UCR based on the number of vehicles in your fleet.

Interstate Operating Authority

Buses or trucks that travel between states or countries need an Interstate Operating Authority (MC Number). The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration gives out the MC Number.
