Medical physicists must have a license to practice in New York State. The Medical Physics Professional License comes from the NYS Department of Education (NYSDOE).
Applicants must have a post-graduate degree in their area of specialty and several years of experience. Those without the experience can receive a permit to practice under the supervision of a licensed professional.
Four types of licenses are available:
- Diagnostic radiological physics;
- Medical health physics;
- Medical nuclear physics; and
- Therapeutic radiological physics (also called "radiation oncology").
