Opticians in New York need an Ophthalmic Dispensing Professional License. This license comes from the New York State Department of Education (NYSDOE).

There are educational, experience, and exam requirements. Those waiting to take the exam can get a limited permit. This permit allows an optician to practice under the supervision of a licensed physician, optometrist, or optician.
