Opticians in New York need a special license. This license is called the Ophthalmic Dispensing Professional License. It comes from the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

To get this license, you need to meet certain educational, experience and exam requirements. If you are waiting to take the exam, you can get a limited permit. This permit lets you work under a licensed doctor, optometrist or optician.
