Plastic Bag Collection and Recycling

About

State Environmental Conservation, Department of

Stores that provide plastic bags to customers must accept the same type of bag for recycling or reuse.

This rule does not apply to any store less than 5,000 square feet or any non-chain store less than 10,000 square feet.

Stores must also provide reusable bags for purchase. Reusable bags must have handles and be made of cloth, a machine washable fabric, or a durable plastic specifically designed for reuse.

Businesses can choose to accept other types of bags. These include newspaper bags, dry cleaning bags, shrink wrap, and clean food bags.

Businesses must keep records of plastic bag recycling, including the number of bags received and recycled. It is the business' responsibility to ensure that bags are actually recycled.
