If a Department of Transportation (DOT) permitted construction project lasts three months or more, you must post informational signs at the worksite.
Signs are required for projects like:
- Roadway reconstruction
- Major installation or upgrade of sewer/water systems
- Installation or upgrade of transit stations or lines
- Bridge reconstruction
- Major utility installation
Projects do not require a DOT construction project informational sign if:
- They require a New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) permit
- They are on a site enclosed with a fence
- A sidewalk shed is installed
These projects must still comply with the signage requirements of Local Law 47 of 2013.
Signs must be made of strong material, such as:
- Vinyl
- Plastic
- Aluminum

Placement of signs
Signs must be placed:
- At least 2 feet above the ground
- No more than 8 feet above the ground
For building projects:
- Put signs on a construction fence or building
- Signs must be easy to see and read by people walking by
For major road or bridge work:
- Put signs at the start and end of the work area
- Signs must be easy to see and read by people walking by
Responsibility
The owner or contractor must make and post all informational signs.
