Rechargeable Battery Collection and Recycling

In New York State, retail businesses that sell rechargeable batteries must accept the same batteries for recycling. Businesses must accept up to ten batteries per person per day from any member of the public.



These batteries include nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion, and sealed lead acid batteries. Businesses must post signs stating their collection practices.

It is illegal to dispose of rechargeable batteries as solid waste in New York State.
