If you need to remove or handle asbestos, you must follow the federal, state and city rules. You must tell the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) at least seven days before you start.
Steps to follow
- Check for asbestos: A certified professional called an "asbestos investigator" can check if there is asbestos in your building.
- Hire a licensed contractor: If asbestos is found, you must hire an "asbestos abatement contractor" licensed by the State of New York Department of Labor (NYSDOL).
- Safe removal: These experts will make sure the asbestos is safely removed to prevent disturbance during renovation, demolition or cleanup.
- Air testing and monitoring: After removing the asbestos, you need air testing and monitoring to make sure the area is safe to use again. You can find licensed air testing firms through the link below.
