What is an ALR License?

You need an Assisted Living Residence (ALR) License if your business provides certain care services. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) issues this license.

Who needs this license?

Businesses that offer services in a home-like setting need this license. You must already have an adult home or enriched housing program license. This license lets you call your business "assisted living."

Enhanced Assisted Living Residence

Your business can apply to become an Enhanced Assisted Living Residence. This lets you help people with special medical needs.

Special Needs Assisted Living Residence

Your business can apply to become a Special Needs Assisted Living Residence. This lets you help people with cognitive disabilities.

New laws are in place to better govern assisted living facilities. Operators should review these laws as soon as possible.
