Attorneys must pass the Bar Exam to practice law in New York State.



All applicants must have completed at least some formal legal studies to qualify for the Bar Exam. All applicants must pass the Bar Exam to practice as an attorney in New York State.

Legal studies include:
  • a Juris Doctor (JD) from an American Bar Association (ABA)-approved law school;
  • a combination of law school study at an ABA-approved law school and study or clerkship at a law office;
  • study at an unapproved law school and practice in another jurisdiction for 5 of the past 7 years; and/or
  • completion of a program of study at a foreign law school that can be considered substantively equivalent to that of an ABA-approved law school in the United States
