Persons keeping non-aggressive honeybees in New York City for recreational or commercial purposes must register their hives annually with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. This registration informs the Department of the location of the hive(s) and the quantity of colonies maintained at a specific location.

Maintaining unregistered beehives in New York City is illegal and may lead to fines.
