Persons keeping non-aggressive honeybees in New York City for recreational or commercial purposes must register their hives annually with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. This registration informs the Department of the location of the hive(s) and the quantity of colonies maintained at a specific location.

Maintaining unregistered beehives in New York City is illegal and may lead to fines.

Annually by May 31st

The hive(s) being registered must first be registered with the state by completing the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets' Honey Bee Health Information form. Submit the form below.

Beekeeper Guidelines and Registration Form

Beekeepers are required to adhere to appropriate beekeeping practices including:

  • maintaining bee colonies in moveable frame hives that are kept in sound and usable condition
  • providing a constant and adequate water source
  • locating hives on a site so that the movement of bees does not become an animal nuisance

Beekeepers should be able to respond immediately to control bee swarms and to remediate nuisance conditions. A beekeeping nuisance means conditions including, but not limited to:

  • aggressive or objectionable bee behavior
  • hive placement or bee movement that interferes with pedestrian traffic or persons residing on or adjacent to the hive premises
  • overcrowded, deceased or abandoned hives

There are two ways to submit your registration electronically:

1) Complete an online registration form.

2) Complete a fillable registration form (pdf) and email it to beekeeping@health.nyc.gov.

Select "New" as the registration type.

Read the beekeeping requirements and complete the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Beekeeper Registration form.
