Certified First Responder (CFR) Certificate

In New York State, you need a certificate to be a first responder. The Certified First Responder (CFR) Certificate comes from the New York State (NYS) Department of Health (NYSDOH).

With this certificate, you can:

• Work for an organization that provides initial life-saving care for sick or injured people
• Provide care in other places

To get certified, you must:

• Pass an exam
• Complete a training program
• Meet state requirements for first responders

You need to know how to do several emergency procedures, including:

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Trauma care
• Emergency childbirth
