          In New York State, you need a certificate to be a first responder. The Certified First Responder (CFR) Certificate comes from the New York State (NYS) Department of Health (NYSDOH).
With this certificate, you can:
- Work for an organization that provides initial life-saving care for sick or injured people
 - Provide care in other places
 
To get certified, you must:
- Pass an exam
 - Complete a training program
 - Meet state requirements for first responders
 
You need to know how to do several emergency procedures, including:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
 - Trauma care
 - Emergency childbirth
