Check Casher License

Your business needs a license to cash checks in New York State. This license comes from the New York State (NYS) Department of Financial Services (DFS).

Check cashers cash checks, drafts or money orders for a fee. If your business charges a fee of less than $1 for this occasional service, you do not need a license.

Extra rules:

• Businesses need additional applications to change owners.
• All workers and owners must register with DFS. This includes fingerprinting.
• DFS controls where check cashers can operate and how much they can charge.
• Some businesses can register as limited stations, which have fewer rules.
