Before you submit your application
This Certificate of Fitness can be obtained by passing a written exam or qualifying for an exemption on the basis of education and experience. All applicants should review the Notice of Exam and Study Materials.

Pay the $25 application fee online by one of the following methods: More info

- E-Check
A convenience fee of 2% will be applied to all credit card payments. The application fee is non-refundable. City employees may request a fee exemption if they upload a copy of their employee ID and a letter from their city agency on official letterhead to confirm that they are a current employee and that the Certificate of Fitness will be used as part of their work-related responsibilities.
To submit an application, click on the Apply Online button. You must be authorized by the company to act as a Designated Coordinator and the company must be approved by FDNY. To request approval, email pubcert@fdny.nyc.gov.

This Certificate of Fitness can only be obtained by passing a written exam. All applicants should review the F-53 Notice of Exam and Study Materials (PDF).
- A completed Certificate of Fitness Application Form (PDF)
- Proof that you have successfully completed a training from the fire alarm company for your fire alarm control panel: F-53 Fire Alarm Panel Verification Letter (PDF)
- A completed and signed F-53 Employment Verification letter(PDF).
- Two forms of identification, at least one must be a government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or a passport.
