In New York State, you need a Commercial Driver License (CDL) to drive a truck or other commercial vehicle. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues the CDL. Before you can apply for a CDL, you must have a regular driver's license.
The DMV can issue a CDL to New York State residents who already have a Class D, Class E or Non-CDL Class C license. If you have a CDL from another state, you can trade it for a New York CDL.
This license does not let you drive school buses.
