Assisted living homes can get a special certificate called the Enhanced Assisted Living Residence (EALR) Certificate from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to provide additional care.
EALRs help people who need more care than usual adult homes:
- They let people "age in place," or stay in the same place as they get older.
- EALRs can hire licensed nurses to provide and supervise care.
- They can also hire a home health care agency to help.
EALRs must have a license to be an Assisted Living Residence:
- Learn more about Assisted Living Residences.
- EALRs cannot take in people who need 24-hour medical care.
- However, people who need 24-hour care after moving in can stay in the EALR.
New rules are in place for all care homes. Operators should review them.
