Home inspectors need a license from the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS).
Home inspectors can look at:
- Heating and cooling systems
- Plumbing systems
- Electrical systems
- Structural systems
- Other parts of residential buildings
Architects, engineers and code enforcement officials do not need this license if they inspect buildings for their job. But, if they start their own business, they need a license.
To get a license, you must:
- Meet education requirements
- Pass an exam
License holders must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years. Architects and engineers do not need to do this.
Licenses are valid for two years.
