Recycling and Waste Removal
All businesses in New York City are required to recycle and dispose of all types of waste through a licensed carting company, or a registered carting company.
What to recycle
Businesses are required to recycle different materials based on their business category.
-
Specific product take-back: Some businesses, such as retailers, auto service stations and hospitals, must take back specific products from the public for recycling and disposal.
-
Street events: Street events are required to recycle and handle their waste and recycling collection. Learn more about recycling at street events.
How to recycle
Dispose waste through a licensed or registered carting company. Registered companies remove construction and demolition debris only. Learn more about how to find a carter licensed by the Business Integrity Commission.
Regulations and requirements
Businesses must:
- inform employees and customers about what and how to recycle by posting signs at their business location(s).
- post and maintain decals listing their carter(s) and collection day(s).
Hazardous and universal waste
Businesses must also follow a variety of state and federal disposal guidelines for hazardous and universal wastes, such as:
- Fluorescent bulbs
- Electronic items
- Rechargeable batteries
- Medical waste
- Motor oil
- Items with CFC or Freon
Many of these materials are banned from disposal with regular commercial trash.
Alternatives to recycling
The Department of Sanitation suggests that businesses donate, sell or reuse unwanted items. Learn more about donations.
