In New York State, employers must give disability benefits to workers. This is for injuries or illnesses that happen off the job.
The law gives cash benefits to employees who:
- Get hurt or sick away from work
- Have disabilities from pregnancies
Employers can collect money from employees to pay for this benefit. Employers can get coverage from:
- Private insurance companies
- The New York State Insurance Fund
- Self-insurance
- Legal exemptions
There are only a few cases where exemptions apply.
